Aims and objectives

The aims of this study are to

  • Create a Wales-wide dataset of dark skies and light pollution using data from 2019 or pre-Covid 19 lockdown, March 2020.
  • Generate a set of maps displaying the dark skies data against the following geographies.
    • Local Authority areas
    • Future Wales boundaries
    • Designated landscapes (AONBs and National Parks)
    • NRW Operational Areas
    • National Landscape Character Areas
    • LANDMAP Visual & Sensory aspect area.
  • Create zonal statistics for each of the above geographies.
  • Create an A2 poster of this data, including key national level statistics
  • Create a web map showing the dark skies data and the above geographies, which allows the user to access the zonal statistics in an intuitive and understandable way.
  • Document the findings in a report which summarises the method and findings of the study.

Whilst not a specific objective, it was recognised early in the study that an approach that aligned well with the approach used to develop the map of England’s dark skies and light pollution would be beneficial.
